Personal Summary

A hard working conscientious and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist who is flexible, well organised individual and able to adapt to challenges when they arise but remaining aware of professional roles and boundaries. Nomakhaya possess a proven ability to devise therapy programmes that increases a clients ability to carry out activities or occupations independently.

Nomakhaya Gugulethu Swana is the Director of NS Occupational Health and Therapy Services,a practice which offers occupational therapy service and medical screening services. She obtainined her Bsc. Occupational Therapy Degree at the University of Western Cape. She is the Founder of Swana School and Assessment Centre, a school for children with special needs which was founded in 2005. The school currently has an enrollement of 150 learners with 14 qualified special needs Educators and Assisstant Educators.

Work Experience

She started working at Murchison Hospital in the paediatric unit for one year. She moved to Ngwelezane Hospital in Empangeni where she was exposed to all types of patients presenting with physical and cognitive challenges. This is where she gained extensive experience in clinical case management, coordination of rehabilitation programmes, staff management, report writing and functional goal settings.

Nomakhaya developed the love and passion of changing peoples lives and gaining insight into health behaviours, a contextual understanding between providing therapy, educating clients, counselling, managing, mentoring, coachimg and how to use interventions steered into her practice management. Nomakhaya opened a Private Practice in  Empangeni in 2004. She was servicing almost all North Coast and Midlands areas that includes Melmoth, Ulundi, Nongoma, Mtubatuba, Hluhluwe, Hlabisa, Jozini and as far as Manguzi.

Nomakhaya attended various courses and workshops including AMA guidelines certificates to equip her in mastering various clinical skills and become an expert in enabling occupation.

  • Certificate of Occupational Health and Safety 
In 2011 Nomakhaya Swana joined multi-discplinary team at BHP Billiton Aluminuim (South 32) where her principal duties were to conduct job analysis and worksite assessments, report writing on assessment findings, condition or injury/disability management and rehabilitation, practical implementation of recommendations such as facilitating light duty, worksite adaptations and work hardening. Providing rehabilitation programs/therapy sessions/follow-up sessions post assessments and drawing up preventative (occupational injuries etc.) and maintenance as well as return to work programs.
Nomakhaya felt ready for the next stage in her life and longed to make a significant contribution to the world of Occupational and Health Services as she felt she has gained excellent leadership skills and well-nourished abilities to conduct functional capacity evaluation as an expertise. She was driven to become more interested in business operations, administrative systems management as well as knowledge of all relevant legislative policies and practices.

Nomakhaya received a Regional Business Achievers Award. She is a member of Business Women Association in the North Coast – Zululand

Training and Mentorship at Umkhanyakude District

She was appointed to provide Training and Mentorship at Umkhanyakude District to District Managers and School Managers. She was offered programs such as the identification of learners with learning difficulty and how to handle them in mainstream schools.

July 2013

Eskom in the Northern Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal

She has been contracted with Eskom in the Northern Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal from 2013 to date to provide capacity, disability and injury management as well as psychosocial risk management.
